Sean Bankhead Details "Promise Ring" Kickstarted His Career

August 2024 · 2 minute read

Sean Bankhead “never really” wanted to be a choreographer, but the universe had other plans.

When speaking at the 2023 Soul Train Awards, he reflected on his humble beginnings with VIBE, which — as the culture and ancestors would have it — was Tiffany Evans‘ “Promise Ring.”

It wasn’t only a breakout hit for Evans, but for Bankhead as well who starred in the visual as her leading man. “I was just a dancer. I was still in high school; I was like 17, scared out of my mind. [I was] a shy kid which is why I had those glasses, but it was the beginning to this career,” said the now 32-year-old.

Later, when speaking on the timeline from “Promise Ring” to Victoria Monét’s “On My Mama,” he confessed that he “never really wanted to be a choreographer,” but Bankhead is grateful for how things transpired.

“I think the calling on my life with music and dance and entertainment just took over. I just always went for anything. I pursued any dream I ever had; it’s been a tough journey, but it’s been so well worth it. I’m so grateful. I’m so blessed to still be able to create cool stuff,” he expressed.

He credited trailblazers like Fatima Robinson, who took him under her wing. He also mentioned Jamaica Craft, Laurieann Gibson, and Brian Friedman as those who “broke down the path” for him to blossom.

Bankhead is the dancing visionary behind the aforementioned records as well as Normani’s “Wild Side,” Cardi B’s “Up,” Ryan Destiny’s “The Same 2.0,” Lil Nas X’s “Industry Baby,” and Tate McRae’s recent Saturday Night Live performance.
